The Old Town of Visp

The old town of Visp developed in a hilly area above the present town because until about 120 years ago there was frequent flooding on the valley floor. The courses of the Rhone and the Vispa were then corrected, embanked and channelled, freeing up the entire area for development. Another reason why people built on high ground was the danger of hostile attacks on the Upper Valais. People could defend themselves better on a hill surrounded by walls. Several fires in the 13th and 14th century and the great fire of 1518 destroyed almost the entire town of Visp. As a result, only a few houses can be found that were built before 1518.
